You haven’t heard from me as often recently because I’ve been at a loss for words. It could be because it is the festive season and there is the stress of preparing for this celebration and going to other people’s parties as well. Nevertheless, as I was waiting to pick up my grandson the other day there were cockatoos everywhere – perhaps 50 or 60 of them flying around and screeching loudly. There are people I know who have backyard aviaries with cockatoos and I must say the birds are more peaceful and willing to relate with their owners. Whereas the cockatoos around the schoolyard sound absolutely crazy as they chase each other from tree to tree.

Backyard shed perfect for terrace home
Picture a 3 storey terrace home in Darlington with a small back yard. Well Barry was obsessive on weekends about repairs around the home and making things out of wood. This balanced his office work during weekdays. Previously in their suburban home they had a garage where he kept his garden tools and a garden shed that was his ‘den’ but now in the inner city the backyard shed was perfect for the terrace home. What’s more he had pulled it apart in the old place and re-assembled it in the new home. It just fit in nicely and he had it set up with all his tools. When he was there the family knew to leave him alone for his much needed space.

Old and new workshops
I saw this photo of a quaint workshop and the thought crossed my mind about how much change there has been in the makeup of workshops nowadays. You can DIY a workshop which is made out of steel and therefore waterproof and weatherproof. Windows and shelving can be installed in these workshops and there are slab floorings. And they come in different colours too. What more can you ask for?

Aviary for the family
It’s been a while since I have written about the benefit of having an aviary for the family. A pet home in the backyard that allows the whole family to share the care and enjoyment of birds as pets. Cockatoos enjoy such a safe haven, especially galas. Children show off their aviaries proudly to their friends. This is a productive activity which is not only fulfilling but also teaches youngsters about responsibility.

Indoor spa
One of the most interesting experiences I have ever had was enjoying an indoor spa in someone’s backyard. The shed the spa was housed in was attractive and private. We came back from horse riding sore and dirty and would shower and slip into the hot spa the size of the room built especially for it. Moments like these are hard to beat and when remembered can throw you back to how it felt then.

Greenhouse in the backyard
I spoke before about having a greenhouse and then I came across this example which showed how possible it is. A greenhouse that is installed in your backyard which keeps plants protected from the harsh weather. My friend Elizabeth has a greenhouse in her backyard and creates small pot plants which are sold for charity to raise funds. A greenhouse is the best.

Protect the puppies
Children love to touch pets, just as adults usually do. However, they are not aware of how they can hurt them especially if the pet is a small breed. This especially happens with dogs and their litter of puppies. The difficulty lies in the mother becoming vicious in an effort to protect her litter. So a family pet can become a problem around small children or visitors. I found the solution to that is to have a good kennel which is weatherproof and there the dog and the litter are safe. Protect the puppies with a garden shed kennel and all is fine.

gardens on cement
Say you are blessed with a cemented backyard because you live in a rented place that has that? I did and we bought large pots and filled them with bushes like a gardenia, a mini rose bush, a jacaranda, an umbrella tree, a lemon bush, a small tomato bush, and one with spinach. Then my husband assembled his shed near the back fence where he had all his hobby equipment and our gardening tools. We also set up our garden furniture and the BBQ and it was a great entertaining area, small but fun.

Greenhouse for fundraising
My friend has a green thumb and can make the most amazing little plants for selling at school fetes for fundraising. Virginia has a greenhouse in her backyard which her husband assembled and she gets great joy out of turning clippings into plants. It doesn’t matter what the weather is like because her plants are safe as well as out of the way of the rest of the family’s activities. It’s really great having the opportunity to create or produce something useful that is fun to make, especially when you have a talent for it. I wish I had a green thumb, although I do manage to keep African violets alive and growing. Maybe because they are so self sufficient.

Garden sheds and male bonding
Have you ever seen guys working together on a car or building something or fishing or sports? It’s like women have their girlie days, men need to bond with their mates in something productive rather than drinking at the pub. Although the latter does bring guys enjoyment it is not what I want to cover now. My stepfather was an electrician (he’s dead now) and on weekends friends came over to work on renovating the house. I often wondered if they worked all week why they got such a kick out of fiddling around the house on the weekends? He installed a shed and they were all full of appreciation for its usefulness.
