Nicholas was 12 years old when his parents promised him the birds of his choice if he was willing to do chores in order to earn some money for his share of the cost of an aviary. This was the most joyful task he had ever had in his life. After six months of dedicated work he had saved up enough that his parents felt his contribution was worthwhile. In actual fact they were so impressed at the way he applied himself to this project. They installed an aviary and he began his bird collection with a pair of cockatoos.
