Professional greenhouses

Filed under: Sheds — Garden Shed Gal at 9:03 pm on Sunday, December 31, 2006

Tulips, photo by ikomi, Canada, exotic flowersThere are people who grow plants as a business and this requires a professional greenhouse. A greenhouse made out of timber and glass is not such a good choice. The best is one that’s easy to assemble comprising of PVC profiles and plastic - policarbonate is extremely strong and doesn’t shatter like glass. This also makes it resistant to strong winds and even snow. Such a greenhouse provides the ideal atmosphere for your plants.

Tim who was in his sixties, had retired from the managerial position of a corporate body when he developed acute depression a few years ago. During his recovery his family and friends worried because he was always so committed to his career that they feared he could just give up and die. At times he wondered too how he would survive without his career, especially that he had been so successful at it. While he contemplated these serious issues he became more focussed on his gardening and through research started up growing exotic plants in a hobby greenhouse which his son assembled for him. In the usual way he applied himself so intently to his hobby that not only was it therapeutic but also financially productive. He had a professional greenhouse installed and began his new business which he came to realise was far more enjoyable than what he was doing before. They say ‘when one door closes, another opens’ and this certainly applied to Tim.

Such a greenhouse is designed to evenly distribute the sunshine and heat, keepiing the cold weather out. I’ll tell you more about this another time.

Dress design as a hobby

Scissors, photo by anon, Dnepr, Ukraine, cutting edgeGarden sheds can be used for many purposes and one useful one is for a hobby that not only brings enjoyment but also makes money. Easy to assemble and in a colour to suit your garden and home, a garden shed is an attractive yet practical choice. What’s more it’s weatherproof and, therefore, materials are protected from inclement weather.

John and Kaz were looking forward to retirement. Their boy, Steven, was married and had a plumbing business. Their daughter, Julie, had just finished high school and was working as a sales assistant. The money was not that good but she was interested in dress design and she was talented. They had cleared some of the garden shed and put in a table that Julie could work on cutting her patterns. What money she made for sewing for their friends came in handy for paying for the part time course at the community college where she was learning the basics of dressmaking.

This is another productive use of a garden shed, which is easy to assemble and affordable.

Workshop for pottery

potteries and pink of sands, photo by Stéphane Vandenwyngaert, Brussels, Belgium, pottery hobbyA garden shed can be used for storage of memorabilia, equipment, tools and as we know great as a hobby shed. Such hobbies are fishing, gardening, sewing, painting, sculptures and pottery. Today I will focus on pottery. It is a rewarding hobby both when creating and raising money from it. A garden shed that is weatherproof, easy to assemble and has a concrete slab flooring is ideal. Pottery can be a messy hobby and therefore needs its own space and kept away from everyone when you are not working on it. A place to store it until you can sell it or give it away is also important.

Gillian had a turbulent adolescence which involved drugs too. But now that she is in her 30s she has her own family and has a fulfilling life. Partly she feels she owes this to her hobby of pottery which helps her to meditate, express her talent, and earn a little bit of money to help in supporting her family. Her husband is a good provider and companion who appreciates that she is able to have this hobby. He assembled a garden shed and apart from being used for storage, Gillian uses it as her studio. It has a skylight and window which makes it perfect. Gillian also has a stall at the local market once a month and earns enough to pay for their annual holiday away.

You too could get your own garden shed to use as a workshop for storage and hobbies.

Dog accommodation

Dog, photo by , Benoit Toccacieli, Frechendets, France, best friendI’d like to focus on a dog kennel again because it’s an interesting addition to the yard. Even if your dog has access mostly to the inside of your home, it is important to have accommodation outside for it. A kennel with a skillion roof can be most suitable for a dog to have its own space and therefore make it more relaxed around people. It can also come in a colour to complement your backyard.

Joe had a beautiful German Shepherd who he called Rex and loved to take out often. The dog was scary looking and barked well but didn’t like to bite people, making him a good watchdog. They had a smallish home and not much of a backyard where they had a dog kennel for Rex. Even though Rex spent a lot of time inside, he could also be found sleeping in his kennel where he seemed to enjoy quiet time, especially when the family had visitors.

Such kennels can also be used for cats and other animals, especially during breeding times, and are portable easy to DIY.

Birds as pets

Cockatoo, photo by anon, Tauranga, New Zealand, pet cockatooWhen you have birds as pets, an aviary is the best option to keep them housed.  You can get a hexagonal or rectangular shape which is ideal for your birds and keeps them protected from the weather.  At the same time they are in their natural environment. An aviary is affordable and can fit in well in your backyard. You can keep one bird or more, depending on the size and type of aviary you choose.

Jane is a sole parent with 2 children. She tries to give her boys a normal lifestyle but some things are just too expensive like having and feeding cats or dogs as pets. However, their grandfather gave them a cockatoo and an aviary to keep it in, which Jane found economical to have. This also gave her boys a pet of their own to love and care for, an important learning experience for kids.

Aviaries are easy to assemble, affordable and attractive for any backyard, so check out what’s available.

Garden landscape

Wheelbarrow, photo by David Guglielmo, Albignasego, Italy, garden equipmentWith a good imagination, inspiration from pictures of people’s gardens, garden equipment and determination, you can create the ideal garden landscape without being a professional landscaper. Once created your garden will bloom and look good with the right equipment such as lawnmower, wheelbarrow, hose, sprinklers and garden tools. This equipment will last long if you keep it protected from the weather when not in use. A garden shed is good for that and for storing stuff as well as using it as a workshop. Otherwise your equipment will rust and need to be replaced much sooner than necessary.

Jim liked creating fishing rods to use on Sundays with his friends on their fishing expeditions which often landed them prize winning tunas and sharks out at sea. They were game fishermen as a hobby. His garden shed was extremely useful for that and he also had a small portable TV to watch sport on Saturday afternoons whilst carrying out this work. His very small yard needed minimal care but what made it easy was his garden equipment which he kept in his garden shed workshop. He preferred fishing to gardening but he believed that at least if you have to do it then you need the right tools and you need to keep them stored away properly. No wonder he was good at whatever he did.

A garden shed comes in different colours to choose from, easy access, ventilation, steel with a concrete slab floor and weatherproof. You can DIY and it locks up too. What’s more your family will appreciate you getting your space and giving them their space.

Plants for Christmas

Filed under: Sheds — Garden Shed Gal at 9:29 pm on Sunday, December 24, 2006

Orchid 3, photo by Hsichen Hsieh, Bucklands Beach, New Zealand, exotic plantsMany will receive plants for Christmas and mostly those who are garden hobbyists. Important assets to such plant care are a garden shed and a greenhouse. A garden shed is needed to store the equipment which keeps it in good condition. A greenhouse keeps the environment required for plants that are not ready for the garden outside and for those special plants that will always be kept there to survive.

In other words if it has insulated 4mm polycarbonate panels then that will mean the greenhouse will have superior heat retention. This will also provide an even diffused light which is so important for growing your plants.

A barn-shape design is easy to assemble and safe too. What’s more such a greenhouse has more headroom and ample space for your plants to grow.

Remember that plastic doesn’t cost as much as the more expensive greenhouses that are built with aluminium or wood frames. Also this model is strong in inclement weather.

Stand alone mini greenhouse

Mini GreenhouseI found another photo of the mini greenhouses I’ve been writing about. This one is compact and doesn’t need to lean against anything. It has shelves and is quite sturdy. Such a simple solution to caring for special plants. As you can see this one has two shelves plus the base part to store the special plants needing this type of environment.

Jean loved her garden and quite often she included plants that she nurtured through from cuttings. Jean would also grow them in little pots for local charities who sold them as seedlings on the stalls to raise money. They were extremely popular. Her mini greenhouse served as the special environment required for many of these plants. That’s why the pots of plants Jean created had a better chance of blooming successfully than most others.

Easy to transport and assemble, these types of mini greenhouses are practical and attractive.

Hobby Cars

Classic cars, photo by Julian Hubbard, Leicester, United Kingdom, safe storageHave you seen some of those classic cars that are the pride and joy of their owners? They are buffed and entered in car rallies especially for displaying their features, which in many cases modern cars no longer have. Modern cars are now so alike that you can hardly tell one from the next, unless you are familiar with their transformation process in detail. At any rate, the vintage car needs to have a space totally of its own, with perhaps one exception - sharing the space with the family car. If that’s the garage then nothing else can be kept there and no one else is permitted access to that area. So the answer is a garden shed large enough to keep the garden equipment and double as a storage shed or to have that stuff in the garage and have a utility shed that will house the valuable classic car. In either case the shed needs to have concrete slab flooring, be weatherproof and have doors that lock.

Richard kept his vintage car in the garage, unlike his friend Alex who had a utility shed for his. Richard’s family understood clearly that their Dad’s car needed to be safe-guarded because it was valuable and it was also an important part of their life. They contributed to the beautification and maintenance process. Also they were all a part of the parade as their car travelled in the rallies and was judged as a result of their efforts. Vanessa’s efforts were also focussed on the garden. So the garden shed held not only the wheelbarrow, lawnmower, empty pots, bags of fertiliser, but also was the perfect place for boxes of memorabilia that they needed to store. It was ventilated yet weatherproof and had windows and a skylight. The shelves were great for everyone’s bits and pieces like fishing gear and art supplies with a desk in the corner too. How else would a family consisting of two adolescents and parents who were hobbyists survive. I forgot to mention they stored their bikes in there too! How’s that?

What’s more, this ideal garden shed can be assembled for you or can be a DIY installation, and can be a colour to suit your yard and home.

Mini lean-to greenhouse

Filed under: Sheds — Garden Shed Gal at 11:52 pm on Wednesday, December 20, 2006

Greenhouse Lean-toI found this great photo which shows what you can do with a mini greenhouse that fits along a wall.  It’s a lean-to greenhouse and is suitable for a hobby or for growing special plants for exhibitions and competitions which need protection from the weather.

Fred did not gamble or drink or have expensive hobbies.  What gave him great pleasure was  growing exotic plants and entering them into exhibitions. Sometimes, he received awards for his efforts and that gave him the greatest pleasure. Most plants fit nicely into his garden but some needed a special environment. Nothing big, that’s why the lean-to greenhouse suited him fine.

Such a simple way to get enjoyment out of creating an organism that becomes a special work of art. The greenhouse is easy to assemble too.
